The Slideshow element is an interactive tool that enables you to present content to learners through a series of slides. Each slide is created using an image and may optionally include caption text.

Additionally, the Slideshow element includes navigation controls, enabling learners to move forward or backward through the slides as needed.

This format is especially beneficial for visual learners, as it helps break down complex information into digestible sections, allowing learners to absorb content at their own pace.

Steps to add a Slideshow element to a course

Add the element to your topic or article by selecting the 'Slideshow' option from the Content box, then follow these steps:

  1. Select the transition type for the slideshow (Slide or Fade).

  2. Indicate the transition time or keep the default of 400 milliseconds.

  3. Specify whether your slideshow should loop.

  4. Add an image to your first and second slides along with captions, if required.

  5. (Optional) Click + Add slide and repeat the above step for each additional slide.

  6. Click 'Save'.

Note: Each slideshow requires a minimum of two slides and can have up to twenty slides. Images are required, but text is optional.

See below for more information about the available settings.

Settings and options

There are a number of settings available for the Slideshow element. These are outlined below:

  • Transition type - There are two transition types to choose from. 'Slide' or 'Fade'. A 'Slide' transition moves one slide into the next, while a 'Fade' transition gradually fades from one slide to the next.

  • Transition time - The selected transition time determines how long each slide transition will take (in milliseconds), allowing you to control the speed at which the slides move from one to the next.

  • Loop slides - When set to 'Yes' (the default), learners can return to the first slide by clicking the next arrow once they reach the final slide. When set to No' learners will stop at the last slide, however, they can still use the back arrow to return back through the series of slides.

  • Images - You can upload an image to each slide using your own image or an image selected via our image library. Images can be up to 5MB in size and must be jpg, gif or png format. After adding an image to each slide, you can optionally edit your image by clicking 'Open image editor'. The image editor allows you to crop your image (using a recommended crop shape for the element called 'Slideshow'), add text, stylise or draw on your images. Each slide in a slideshow is 900 X 500. Larger images will automatically be cropped to match this requirement.

  • Caption - You can optionally add a caption to each slide, with a maximum length of 500 characters. Captions can be formatted using bold, italics, and underlining for emphasis. Captions are centre-aligned.

  • Mandatory completion - You can enable the option to require learners to view the entire slideshow by checking the 'Explorers must view all items before progressing' checkbox at the bottom of the element. When enabled, this setting prevents learners from progressing in the topic or article until they have viewed the entire slideshow.

Adding, re-ordering and deleting slides

You can add, re-order or delete slides as follows:

  • Add - Each slideshow requires a minimum of two slides. Click + Add slide for each additional slide. You can have up to twenty slides in a slideshow.

  • Re-order - Drag-and-drop slides to re-order them. Hover over the slides until a hand cursor appears, then click your mouse while moving a slide into your preferred order.

  • Delete - Click 'Delete slide' below the caption area for any slide you want to remove. Slides cannot be removed when there are just two.

Examples

Below are some examples of the Slideshow element in action.

Example 1 - Uncaptioned slide with text on the image.

Example 2 - Captioned slide with text on the image.

Example 3 - Captioned slide with no text on the image.
