The default language in Tribal Habits is English. Our learner (explorer), creator and admin portals default to English and our ready-made training library contains only English content.
That being said, we do support languages other than English in certain situations - especially for your learners.
Note: At this time, our support for languages other than English extends only to learners. Our creator and admin features, as well as our library of ready-made content, are English-language only.
Can we set a default language for each user?
Yes. You can set one of our support languages for each user in your portal. This can be set manually via an Admin, via CSV Import or via an integration.
For Admins manually creating or editing a user, there is a 'Language' dropdown used to select the language for that user.
For Admins using a CSV Import, they can add a 'Language' column and enter in a two digital language code for each user (outlined below).
Admins can also set a default language for the portal and then all newly created users will be given that language as their default (while existing users could be updated via a CSV import in bulk). Admins can edit the organisation language in the Admin/Account/Subscription tab in the Settings panel.
At this time, learners cannot set their own language, but we will allow this change in the future.
What user languages are supported by Tribal Habits?
The latest list of available user languages will be shown in the 'Language' dropdown on a user profile in the Admin area. At the moment, the list of available languages includes (with their language code in brackets):
English (EN)
French (FR)
German (DE)
Spanish (ES)
Italian (IT)
Japanese (JP)
More languages are being added every month and we will keep this article updated with those changes. If you would like to enquire or request a new language, please contact our Support team with your request. Requested languages will be prioritised in the translation process.
What is translated for a user language setting?
When a user has a language selection other than English SOME text in the platform will be automatically displayed into that language. As noted above, this excludes the creator and admin areas of the platform, as well as created content in a training module.
What is changed is the system content within a training module (topic). Each topic consists of two types of content:
System content - This is the 'templated' content used by our content elements or in templated parts of a topic. This content is 'fixed' and cannot be edited by your creators. Some of this content is optional (e.g. the Overview or Destination parts of a topic can be disabled) but some content is required (e.g. the labels used on buttons or tabs for interactions within a topic). For example:
The "Submit" button on a Q&A element
The feedback "Failed" on a quiz
The tab to select the "Forum"
The text in the Overview module explaining insights
And so on
Training content - This is the content created within each topic. It might be the content within a topic from our ready-made library (created by one of our training experts) or the content created by you within a custom topic. This is the content you add into our elements and templates. For example:
The script in a Narration element
The question and answers within a quiz
The text in a set of tabs
The language setting for each user will change the system content. So if a user has selected Italian, then all the system content in a topic will appear in Italian - buttons, prompts, feedback, default text, tabs, menus will be in Italian. The training content will be in whatever language was used to create that content (English for our ready-made library content or whatever language you used when creating the topic - see below).
The Language feature therefore exists to complement your own use of non-English language training content. The Language feature does not automatically translate your English language training content into another language. It only changes the system content.
So for our Italian user above, the ideal would be that you also have an Italian-translated version of your training module. Then your user would see your training content in Italian as well as all the system content in Italian - for a completely immersive Italian experience!
Note: While the learner sees the system content in a topic in their set language, we have not yet applied translations to the learner homepage. While there is limited text on the homepage, that text remains in English. We will apply translations to the homepage in 1Q25.
Note: While the learner sees the system content in their set language, we have not yet applied translations to learner email notifications. These email notifications remain in English. We will apply translations to email notifications in 1H25 as the new custom notification feature is launched.
What languages can we create training content in?
In theory, any language. Our creator elements are not language specific. You can create your own content in any language. What our Language feature now does is complement your non-English training content by also changing the system content.
This means you can type text content in whatever language you like or upload videos in any language.
Our Sage AI Narration feature, which converts text into speech, also supports many bilingual and non-English characters, allowing you to create Narration or audio files in languages other than English including French, Italian, German, Hindi, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Mandarin, Cantonese, Portuguese and Japanese.
How can we utilise the ready-made library topics in a language other than English?
At this time, we do not plan to translate our extensive library of ready-made topics into other languages. However, since our library topics can be copied into your portal and edited by you, it would not be difficult for your organisation to translate required topics into required languages as required.
You can then set your user languages for a completely translated learning experience.
