The Scenario element provides a 'choose your own adventure' interaction for role-plays, branching discussions and interactive scenarios.

How does the Scenario element work?

The Scenario element functions as an interactive learning tool that allows learners to go through a visual scenario with varying statements, questions, choices and outcomes.

While all learners will start with the same introduction and end at the same conclusion, you can create interactions with branching pathways based on learner selections to create an engaging experience.

A few key components to keep in mind as you build your scenario are:

Introduction -The introduction is the starting point and the first interaction learners will see in the scenario activity.

Scene - Each scene serves as the title for a sub-section of the scenario. You can have multiple scenes in each scenario.

Page - Pages live within each scene and create the pathways learners will take through each scene using statements and questions.

Completion - The completion is the final page learners will see before completing the scenario. Each scenario can only have one completion, and all learners will end up on this page regardless of the path they take.

Branching – For each Scene and each Page within a Scene, you can ‘branch’ the scenario. You may direct the learner to a different Scene depending on their response to a question, or even to a specific Page within a specific Scene. Or you may ask the learner to retry the question or even advance them directly to the conclusion.

NOTE: This is a complex learning interaction, which requires careful design and testing. Please ensure you thoroughly test your scenario before launching your topic or updating your topic.

Steps to add a Scenario element to a course

Add the element to your topic or article by selecting the 'Scenario' option from the Content box, then follow these steps:

Create your introduction

  1. Optionally add a title for the scenario’s introduction.

  2. Enter a title and introductory text. This should explain the purpose of the scenario, what will happen and what you want to learner to do.

  3. Choose a background, character and pose that suit the context of the scenario.

Note: further scenes will inherit these options by default, or you can choose to create a custom background and character for each scene.

Add your first scene

  1. Click + Add scene.

  2. Add a title and text for the scene. Once again, this can be viewed as an introduction for this scene, perhaps explaining what will happen in the pages within this scene.

  3. Optionally modify the background and/or character by changing the ‘Scene’ drop-down to ‘Custom’ and configuring the related settings.

  4. Update the character’s pose for the scene to fit the context.

Add pages

Pages are split into two types, Statements and Questions.

Click + Add page to begin and select the type of page you want to create.

Creating a statement page:

Optionally add a title for the statement page.

  1. Optionally add a title for the statement page.

  2. Add page text.

  3. Update the character’s pose to fit the context of the page.

  4. Specify the action learners will take from here:

    1. Continue. When selected, you can indicate whether learners will continue to the next page in the sequence or select an alternative page.

    2. Go to conclusion. When selected, learners will be taken to the completion page and end the scenario.

Creating a question page

  1. Add page text.

  2. Update the character’s pose to fit the context of the page.

  3. Click + Add to add a response to the question. Each question page can have up to three responses:

    1. Enter the answer learners will be able to select for this response.

    2. Add the feedback that will be displayed if this response is selected.

    3. Update the character’s pose to fit the context of the feedback.

    4. Add the action for the response:

      1. Continue. When selected, you can indicate whether learners will continue to the next page in the sequence or select an alternative page.

      2. Try again. When selected, learners will be taken back to the responses to make a new selection.

      3. Go to conclusion. When selected, learners will be taken to the completion page, and end the scenario.

Add additional scenes and pages

Optionally add further scenes and pages to help complete the scenario and bring the learner to the completion page.

Completion

  1. Optionally add a title for the scenario’s completion page.

  2. Add completion page text. Remember that the Completion page is seen by all learners regardless of the path they took, so it should contain text suitable for all outcomes.

  3. Choose a background, character and pose that suit the context of this scenario.

FAQ: Do we have to use a character?

No! You can create Scenarios without a character. You can just select and then hide the character from any or all Scenes and Pages. Doing this will centre the text on the screen and remove the 'speech bubble' effect. It allows you to have non-character driven scenarios that still take advantage of engaging backgrounds and branching options.

FAQ: What backgrounds are available for the Scenario element?

At the moment, there are over 70 different backgrounds available in 9 different categories as follows. We will be adding more backgrounds and categories over time and do take requests and suggestions.

FAQ: What characters and poses are available for the Scenario element?

At the moment, there are 29 different characters, each with at least 8 different poses. We will be adding more backgrounds and categories over time and do take requests and suggestions.

FAQ: Can we add custom backgrounds and characters to the Scenario element?

Creators cannot directly add custom backgrounds and characters to the Scenario element at this time (we may add this feature in the future depending on demand).

However, our Support team can add custom backgrounds and characters to your organisation's asset library for the Scenario element. Your organisation will need to create the images and email them to our Support team. There are certain restrictions / requirements on the images that you must follow when preparing your images which are outlined below. Once you have your images ready, please contact our Support team.

FAQ: What are the requirements for customer background and character images?

  • Backgrounds

    • Background images must be JPG format and 1920 x 1080 pixels in size. Please ensure each background image is under 500KB in size.

  • Characters

    • Characters require a unique name (not a name already in use by one of the standard characters). Your organisation can suggest the name for your character, but please check names of existing characters to ensure its unique.

    • Characters require a Headshot image (named headshot.png). Headshot images must be PNG format with a transparent background and 200 x 200 x pixels in size. Here are examples of Headshot images.

  • Characters require at least one pose image. Each pose image must be named as the pose will appear in the dropdown menu in the Scenario element - e.g. smiling.png or surprised.png. Pose images must be PNG format with a transparent background. The character 'safe zone' (i.e. the area the torso should be within) is 400 x 700 pixels. The Height MUST be 700 pixels. However the width can be more or less. The pose will be centered in place. Width larger than the safe zone will simply allow the pose to extend 'under' any text beside it.
