Important: This feature is currently in beta and rolling out gradually. A broader release is planned for early October.
Overview
A module is a single block of content on a dashboard layout. Some show charts, some show lists of people or knowledge, and some are static blocks you fill in yourself, such as links, images or text.
There are 25 modules available and you can place up to 20 on each layout. Modules are added while you are editing a layout using the Add a module button. See How do I create and edit a dashboard layout?.
Note: For an introduction to the dashboard and how layouts and modules fit together, see What is the custom admin dashboard?.
THIS FEATURE REQUIRES A BUSINESS PLAN
Please note that the custom admin dashboard is not available on smaller plans or legacy plans.
Contact our team at [email protected] if you would like access to this feature.
Key concepts
Categories: Modules are grouped as Popular, Static, People, Results and Knowledge, with an All modules option. The categories only affect how you browse them when adding a module.
Settings: Every module has its own settings, opened with the cog icon found in the top right while editing a layout. Every module lets you set your own Title in place of its default heading.
People filters: Many modules can be filtered to show data for a specific group of people. Filter by Type, admin status, Group, Role (if the Roles feature is enabled in your portal) and any custom fields your organisation has set up.
Date range: Chart modules let you choose a range of 1 to 14 periods, where a period is days, weeks or months. The default is the last 6 months.
Your access applies: Every module shows data based on the access of the admin viewing it, not the admin who built the layout.
Popular modules
When you open Add a module, the Popular category is shown first. It contains four modules that suit most admins as a starting point:
Login activity
New people
Topic results
Out of date library topics
Each is described in full in its own category below.

How often module data updates
Module data is held for up to 60 minutes so that your dashboard loads quickly. The top right of the dashboard shows when your data was last updated, with a refresh button next to it to pull the latest figures immediately.
Login activity is the exception. It always shows live data.
Note: The last updated time and the refresh button apply to the browser you are using. If you refresh on your computer, your phone will still show its own separately held data until you refresh there too.
Modules and your admin access
Every module shows data according to the access of the admin viewing it. Two things follow from this.
A shared layout can show different results to different admins. If a module is filtered to a group of people that another admin cannot see, they will see fewer results than you do.
Four modules show no data to People admins. Topics created, Out of date library topics, Topic version reviews and Self registration tokens display information People admins are not permitted to see. The module stays on the layout, but in place of its data it shows "Your admin access level does not allow viewing of this module's data."
This most commonly happens when a People admin takes a layout built by a different admin type, or when an existing admin's access level is changed to People. The module is left in place rather than removed, so that the layout still works correctly if that admin's access changes again later.
FAQs
Can I put the same module on a layout twice?
Yes, and each copy is configured separately. This is useful when you want the same information for different groups of people, for example one Topic results module filtered to your head office and another filtered to your field staff.
Can I change a module's heading?
Yes. Every module has a Title setting. Enter your own wording to replace the default heading, or leave it blank to keep the default.
Why does a chart only offer months?
Most chart modules let you choose days, weeks or months. Monthly active users is always measured in calendar months, because that is what a monthly active user means.
Why can I select topics for some modules but not others?
Modules that report on specific knowledge, such as Topic results and Topics completed, let you choose which topics or pathways to include. Modules that report on your portal as a whole, such as Topics created and Total enrolments, cover everything.
Why does my module show no data at all?
There are three common reasons. Your admin access level may not permit it, in which case the module says so directly. The module's filters may exclude everyone, so check its people filters and date range. Or there may genuinely be no activity in the period selected – try widening the date range.
Will new modules be added?
Yes. New modules are added over time and appear in the Add a module list automatically, ready to place on your existing layouts.
