Each topic you create in Tribal Habits can be a 'standard' or 'short' topic.

Standard topics

Standard topics are like a traditional online learning module. They usually contain several points, which act as 'chapters' to break your content up (although you can have up to 20 points per standard topic). Standard topics also have a main navigation page, and can optionally have an end of topic assessment. You can additionally enable system-generated modules such as an Overview, Destination and Insights module.

Standard topics are perfect for more substantial knowledge.

Short topics

Short topics are similar to standard topics in that they're an online learning module. However, they are usually much smaller pieces of learning. While 'standard topics' can contain up to 20 points, 'short topics' can only have one single point. They also cannot include assessment modules or other system-generated modules available for standard topics.

Short topics are ideal for product knowledge, internal policies or simple processes.

When creating short topics, you do not have access to our free topic review service.

Note: Historically, short topics have been known as 'articles'. The concept of articles was removed from Tribal Habits in February 2025.

Toggling between 'standard' and 'short' mode for a topic

When first creating a new topic, you're required to specify whether it should be a standard or short topic.

If you later decide that the alternative mode would better suit your topic, you can update your topic accordingly.

  1. Access the topic as a creator.

  2. In 'Settings' click "Manage navigation'.
At the top of the page, you'll be able to see the currently selected mode (i.e. 'Standard topic' or 'Short topic'.

  3. Click 'Change' in the alternative mode to make the switch.

  4. If your topic is already published, republish your topic for the new mode to take effect.

Note: When changing from a standard to short topic, you will need to ensure that your topic contains no more than one point/part, and that all additional modules are disabled for the topic (e.g. Assessment modules and other system-generated modules).
